METHOD OF TEFL

IS IT POSSIBLE FOR TEACHER TO USE ENGLISH WITHOUT USE MOTHER TONGUE IN TEACHING PROCESS?

Indonesia is a developing country that prepares the generation to have the standard of capabilities which possessed by other countries in the world. One of the skills is to master English as the foreign language. I will discuss about English teaching in Indonesia, related to the use of Direct Method. ‘Is it possible for the teachers in Indonesia to use full English in teaching without  the use of mother tongue at all? ‘.

Before we go to that point, let's find out what the direct method is.

Direct Method is the learning of language in a relevant setting. This method has one basic rule and ...
that is that no translation is allowed. The meaning of the name "Direct Method" comes from the fact that meaning is to be conveyed directly into the second language through demonstration and visual aids.
The main principles of the Direct Method are as follows:
  • Indonesian language is not used in the classroom.
  • The learner is actively involved in using the language in realistic everyday situations.
  • Students are encouraged to think in the target language.
  • Speaking is taught first before reading or writing.
  • Only everyday vocabulary and sentences are taught.
  • Concrete vocabulary is taught through demonstration, objects, and pictures.
  • Abstract vocabulary is taught by association of ideas.
Could it be? I do not think so. We have to realize that there are so many students who haven’t been able yet to capture of what the teacher means when he use this method. There are still many children using the local language as their everyday language. Sometimes they are even harder to understand the Indonesian language. Teachers should still use the Indonesian language or regional languages as a tool for teaching English.
